Life Update…What I’ve Been Up to in the Past 4 Months

Hello everyone! I know, I know, I’ve been quiet for the past four months. My last post went over my experience attending my first EconoMe conference in March in Cincinnati, Ohio. Everything was amazing except for the cold and breezy weather (I’m a Texan y’all). I even got to talk and take a picture with the founder of the conference, Diania Merriam. I will most likely be attending next year and look forward to meeting both old and new friends. 🙂 I’ve been living a lot of life, parenting my daughter, and going through a bit of a career adjustment. So, let’s catch up!

I’ve Been Focusing on My Personal Health

I’ve been sticking to my goal of at least 30 minutes of exercise at least five days per week. This existed of mostly running and cycling until last month when it was too hot for me to stand running in the heat. Now, it’s mostly walking and yoga inside the house while enjoying the air conditioning. I’ve tried my best to exercise in the morning before work and after I drop off my daughter at daycare. This helps me start the day by getting fresh air, getting in most of my steps, and getting natural energy. Most days I get at least 10,000 steps and I’m noticing a difference in my muscle definition in my legs and my core.

I Cut Out Some Unnecessary Subscriptions to Lower My Monthly Spend

I found myself paying for too many YouTube creators that I didn’t watch anymore, a beer subscription, and buying too much food with Hello Fresh. I decided to cut it all out and be more thoughtful about what I was mindlessly paying for on a monthly basis. I’ve recently added in YouTube subscription but only for the two content creators that I watched the most often. Just last week I started using Hello Fresh again and was happy to see that they’ve offered more flexibility in skipping orders and making adjustments to keep customers happy.

I Was Laid Off From My Job

Something unexpected that happened was getting laid off from my job. Hearing about the big tech layoffs was sobering, but I honestly never thought that it would happen to me. I knew something was up when I entered a 1:1 Zoom meeting with my manager and our Director of the People team was there. I took a deep breath and listened to the news that me and dozens of other team mates and international offices were being closed. Luckily, I was still entitled to my commission payments from the new sales opportunities that I sourced and closed by my last day and was entitled to 1 month of severance. Although it wasn’t the best severerance package, it was better than nothing. I used the money to pay down some credit card debt and pad my emergency fund.

I Got An Amazing New Job with a Thoughtful + Growing Company

This is perhaps the most exciting news that happened in the past few months. I was laid off but thankfully had already been actively interviewing for two months and made it to the final round with an amazing e-learning company. I had 2-weeks of downtime to prepare for the final interview and I ended up getting an offer! 🙂 The new company was more well rounded, cared about work/life balance, and had a growing tech partnerships team that I could help grow and expand. I’ve been there for almost a month and couldn’t be happier.

In conclusion…

I’m back and in a much healthier and happier place emotionally and financially then I was before. I’ll dedicate myself to at least 1 blog post per month and I’m more at peace with taking the slower route to full financial independence (more about that in the future. Thanks for reading and stay tuned. 😉
